The drive
This classic Hill Country loop pairs open ranch roads with Blanco’s courthouse square, a suggested barbecue stop, the limestone ridge-top sweepers of FM 32, a scenic overlook, and the historic Devil’s Backbone Tavern.
Route overview
From Fredericksburg, take US-290 East to Stonewall, then FM 1623 South to Blanco. Continue via US-281 South to FM 32 East for the Backbone, then retrace FM 32 West to US-281 North and return via US-290 West.
The route, stop by stop
Stop 01
Fredericksburg to Stonewall
US-290 East · about 14 miles
Take US-290 East toward Stonewall. Expect more traffic through the winery corridor, especially on weekends.
Stop 02
Stonewall to Blanco
FM 1623 South · about 25–30 miles
Turn right onto FM 1623 and follow it south into Blanco as traffic thins and the landscape opens.
Stop 03
Blanco and Old 300 BBQ

Park near the historic courthouse square and walk to Old 300 BBQ if open. Allow time to explore the square.
Stop 04
Drive the Devil’s Backbone
US-281 South → FM 32 East
From Blanco, take US-281 South, then turn left onto FM 32 East. Follow the limestone ridge through flowing sweepers, live oaks, ranchland, and changing elevation.
Stop 05
Scenic overlook
Along FM 32 · about 10–15 minutes
Watch for the signed scenic pullout. Pull completely off the roadway before stopping.
Stop 06
Devil’s Backbone Tavern
4041 FM 32, Fischer · confirm hours
The historic tavern and dance hall is directly on the Backbone. If driving, keep the stop to sightseeing and non-alcoholic refreshments.
Stop 07
Return to Fredericksburg
FM 32 West → US-281 North → US-290 West
Retrace FM 32 West to US-281 North toward Johnson City, then take US-290 West through Hye and Stonewall to Fredericksburg.
